What being a B Corp means to us
About seven months ago, See3 was officially named a B Corporation company. Since then, we’ve learned a lot about what it means and how it impacts our business. One thing is for sure: it’s more than a title. It’s a responsibility, a higher standard, and an opportunity to do business better.
The mission of B Corp is to use business as a force for good. Joining the B Corp community allowed us to see who else was working responsibly and how they were doing so. While we already considered our shareholders to be the broader community and the environment, we are now part of a community of like-minded businesses. It feels like a natural articulation of why we are in business.
B Work and Hiring
More than a snazzy title, the B Corp community has several exclusive benefits. We now have access to tools and platforms only available to companies who put their people and their environment first. One of our favorites and one we’ve already used successfully is B Work. B Work is a job board and hiring process that allows for a better hiring experience for both the employer and the candidates.
B Work assists in creating the both job posting and applicant screening assessment to objectively measure how qualified a candidate is for a job. Additionally, the objective score provided by the assessment reduces bias, which encourages a more inclusive hiring process that adheres to hiring for diversity and inclusion best practices. As a result, we’ve had more people of color as finalists for jobs than in the past. We’ve made a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and B Work supports an objective hiring process that extends the reach of our talent networks to more people of color, LGBTQ, and other under served groups.
Holding Ourselves Accountable
Another benefit of being B Corp is at the personal level. It gives employees and candidates a lot to talk about, drumming up awareness for what B Corp is and how See3 does business. It’s a standard we can hold ourselves to and strive for every day.
B Corp’s requirements are about more than just people. We also have an obligation to the environment. Our office is equipped with a timer-controlled thermostat, so the AC doesn’t run all night long. We use low-flow toilets and low-emissions lightbulbs. The furniture we use matters, too. A lot of what we use is gently used or up-cycled chairs and desks. We compost and offer reusable kitchenware for staff to use. Each of these seemingly small efforts adds up big time to a healthier environment in and outside the office.
What it Means to Others
The nonprofit and social causes we work with can trust that we are there to serve their needs as fellow do-gooders. The B Corp declaration insists companies conduct business ‘as if people and places matter.’ We also ‘aspire to do no harm and benefit all,’ so you can feel good about working with us no matter your need or cause.
